He would later make different albums, but he never made a better one. And the album's songs contain the best realization of Springsteen's poetic vision, which soon enough would be tarnished by disillusionment. Sparks fly on E Street when the boy prophets walk it handsome and hot All the little girls souls grow weak when the man-child gives them a double shot Them. Lopez's busy Keith Moon style is appropriate to the arrangements in a way his replacement, Max Weinberg, never could have been. Following the personnel changes in the E Street Band in 1974, there is a conventional wisdom that this album is marred by production lapses and performance problems, specifically the drumming of Vini Lopez. Musically and lyrically, Springsteen had brought an unruly muse under control and used it to make a mature statement that synthesized popular musical styles into complicated, well-executed arrangements and absorbing suites it evoked a world precisely even as that world seemed to disappear. The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle represented an astonishing advance even from the remarkable promise of Greetings the unbanded three-song second side in particular was a flawless piece of music. Though Springsteen expressed endless affection and much nostalgia, his message was clear: this was a goodbye-to-all-that from a man who was moving on. With his help, Springsteen created a street-life mosaic of suburban society that owed much in its outlook to Van Morrison's romanticization of Belfast in Astral Weeks. ![]() His chief musical lieutenant was keyboard player David Sancious, who lived on the E Street that gave the album and Springsteen's backup group its name. It was recorded by Springsteen with the E Street Band at 914. Tonight turned out so much better than we had any right to expect a fantastic concert by The E Street Shuffle where they played the Born To Run, and the Darkness On The Edge Of Town albums, back to back. The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle offers a glimpse into Bruce Springsteen’s quick transition from a neophyte into an accomplished singer-songwriter, sharing the events from where he took inspiration and projecting it from his lens.Bruce Springsteen expanded the folk-rock approach of his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., to strains of jazz, among other styles, on its ambitious follow-up, released only eight months later. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle is the second studio album by Bruce Springsteen. Lastly, the album closer “New York City Serenade” is a lengthy jam that tells the story of a city girl’s exhilarating life, complete with top-notch instrumentation and vocal delivery to boot. Next is “Rosalita”, another great song that exemplifies Springsteen’s energy and carries a driving rhythm with unique saxophone accents embedded into it. “Incident on 57th Street” is one of the prime cuts of this record, driven by an amazing combination of piano, organ, and guitar progressions, not to mention the evocative lyrics and delivery that none could match. Next is “Kitty’s Back” is a great guitar-driven rocker that has him stapled at the instrument, while “Wild Billy’s Circus Story” provides a contrast with its slight decrease in energy, although it is still a great listen overall. Following it is “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)”, talks about an undying love to a person he lost with summer boardwalk themes, with accordion accents coming in at the right times to hint at Springsteen’s musical legacy. It also showcases Springsteen’s decent guitar skills as soon as the vocals end in the song. ![]() The album opens with “The E Street Shuffle”, which uses horns to welcome the listener to a jazzy blend of instruments while a noticeable Wah effect is used to add texture to the driving bass of the song.
